Environmental initiatives take many forms and continue to grow at Tremblant. From the mountain summit to the pedestrian village, composting is part of a collective effort that is gaining momentum, notably with the addition of a new organic waste sorting facility right on site.
Composting from the Mountain Top to the Pedestrian Village
Tremblant is placing increasing importance on organic waste recovery. At the top of the mountain, the Grand Manitou cafeteria participates in composting efforts, alongside numerous establishments throughout the pedestrian village. Restaurants, hotels and other participating businesses all contribute to diverting food waste from landfills.
Each compost bin is identified according to its location of origin, allowing for better tracking of the collected materials. This collective effort covers a wide area and makes composting an integral part of the destination’s daily operations. Every participating establishment plays a role.
A New Milestone for Tremblant
Since summer 2026, Tremblant has had its very own organic waste sorting facility, located near the base of the pedestrian village, at Pit à Flo, close to the Versant Soleil roundabout.
This development marks an important step in our environmental efforts. Rather than simply participating in waste collection, we have invested in infrastructure that allows us to manage part of the process directly on site. The organic waste collected is sorted and prepared before being transported to the Complexe environnemental de la Rouge in Rivière-Rouge.
A Significant Investment in Organic Waste Recovery
At the sorting facility, the contents of each bin are emptied onto a sorting table, where an ecocentre attendant manually removes any non-compostable materials that could contaminate the organic waste. These items are then directed to the appropriate recycling or garbage bins. Once this quality control step is complete, the organic waste is stored in a container for transportation to the Complexe environnemental de la Rouge.
Establishing this facility represents an investment of more than $200,000. This includes the feasibility study, custom design of the sorting table, recruitment and training of ecocentre attendants, the purchase of a vehicle equipped with a lift platform to facilitate bin collection, as well as the acquisition of new bins.
“This represents a significant investment in our sustainability initiatives and an important achievement that we are proud of. By developing our own facilities, we are strengthening our ability to manage the organic waste generated by activities on the mountain and in the village, while reinforcing our long-term efforts.” – Baptiste Tesson, Sustainability Project Coordinator, Station Mont Tremblant
From Tremblant to Rivière-Rouge: Giving Organic Waste a Second Life
Once sorted at Tremblant, the organic waste is transported to Rivière-Rouge, where it is delivered to the composting facility at the Complexe environnemental de la Rouge (CER).
There, it goes through several processing stages. The organic matter is first mixed with bulking materials, such as green waste, then aerated, watered and turned to encourage decomposition by microorganisms. During this stage, the temperature must reach at least 55°C for a minimum of three days. The material then undergoes further maturation on indoor and outdoor platforms before being screened.
Once ready, the finished compost is distributed to residents of surrounding municipalities or sold to local farmers, where it can be used to enrich the soil. This process completes the cycle: food waste generated by Tremblant’s operations becomes a natural resource that can be put to use again. It’s a great example of the circular economy in action.
A Collective Effort That Makes a Difference
The opening of our sorting facility at “Pit à Flo” marks an important milestone, but it is part of a broader commitment. From employees who sort waste at the source to the establishments participating in composting and the teams who ensure our facilities operate smoothly, every contribution matters.
“At Tremblant, we are proud to continually improve our practices and implement concrete solutions to better manage our waste. Because sustainability is built through everyday efforts, one initiative at a time.” – Baptiste Tesson
